I hand lay N scale turnouts using printed circuit board so do I a lot of soldering. One frustrating aspect of soldering is controlling how much solder is used. I used end up with too much on the rails and PC board and that's big mess to clean up. I came up with a simple method of limiting how much solder is applied and this is an idea you may be able to use on your own soldring projects.

All you need is some rosen core solder and an X-Acto knife (a sturdy utility knife will do as well).

Rosen cor solder and X-Acto knife

Just take your X-Acto knife and start slicing off disks of solder (just like slicing a hot dog but on a much smaller scale).

Sliceing the rosen core solder A few disks of solder

You'll need to do some tests to see how much solder is enough and how "thick" to make your slices. Now that you've got a bunch of little disks take the knife and skewer one by sticking the point of the knife in the middle of the disk.

Now you can take the disk and put it on the parts you want to solder together.

Putting the disk on the parts to be soldered

Touch your iron to it...

aaaannnnd....

A neat soldered joint

...you have a soldered joint with just the right amount of solder on it. This method won't work in all situations; you need to be able to set your disks on top of the parts your soldering.
